The 27-year-old Iranian earned rave reviews for his performance against the Austrians and, having replaced the injured German international to make his first start in Europe’s foremost club tournament, now feels ready to fill Ballack’s playmaking role permanently should Bayern’s management want him to.
“My first Champions League start was positive but the whole team played well. I am glad that I was allowed to make a small contribution.
“I hope that Michael (Ballack) stays with us. I do believe I can fill the position but which position I play is down to the coach,†Karimi told the German sports magazine Kicker.
Karimi’s seemingly imminent promotion – Bayern boss Felix Magath has also recently stated that the Iranian could, indeed, be the answer when Ballack leaves for pastures new – is even more remarkable considering the former Pirouzi favourite has, so far this season, not been a regular starter.
“When we think of Bayern Munich we think of a very strong side. I knew that I would need time (to settle) here,†revealed the reigning AFC Player of the Year.
“If you do not play well you cannot expect to be in the first team. I am not entirely happy with my form and I feel my best has yet to come. I came to Munich to enjoy success and I want to stay here longer.â€Â
With the Bundesliga giants still heavily involved in three competitions, Karimi’s desire for silverware may well be realised although the ‘Wizard of Tehran’ is quick to admit that Bayern’s fate is well and truly in their own hands.
“We have a great team and that has created a terrific team spirit. Nevertheless we must continue to work hard in order to be successful.
“If we go into each game with 100 percent concentration we have every opportunity to go far.â€Â
Given his terrific display on Tuesday, Karimi will be hoping to be further involved when Magath’s charges continue their league campaign against FSV Mainz 05 at the Allianz Arena this weekend.
