German newspaper Bild wrote that German security officials were concerned that the 840 Iranian fans and 31 reporters expected for the tournament may contain some dangerous elements at a time when relations between Tehran and the West are strained.
In the paper, Norbert Geis of the Christian Social Union was quoted as saying that: "The domestic intelligence service must very closely scrutinize Iranian football fans who want to come to the World Cup."
Reinhard Grindel, an interior affairs expert from the Christian Democrats said: "Even if the number of visa applications from Iran surges ahead of the World Cup, every individual case must be checked carefully." |
