Velasco re-signs contract to coach Iran volleyball team for 2 more years

Professional volleyball coach Julio Velasco has signed a contract to steer national Iranian men’s team for another two years.

The sixty-year-old Argentine arrived in Iran on Wednesday for talks with officials from the Islamic Republic of Iran Volleyball Federation (IRIVF).

He finalized an agreement with Mohammad Reza Davarzani, President of the IRIVF on Thursday.

Iran’s victory in the 16th edition of the Asian Men’s Championship was a great improvement from its silver medal finish in 2009.

The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup 2011, which ran from November 20 to December 4, 2011, in Japan, was the major step in the qualification process for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Iran’s national volleyball team could not secure a berth for the 2012 Olympic competitions as it took the ninth place at the end of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup 2011.

Iran currently ranks 14th in the FIVB World Rankings with total a point of 53. It is followed by China with 48 points, France 47.75, Cameroon 46.75, Canada 46 and Japan 41.75.
