The Saudis host Group B rivals Iran next Saturday and will be encouraged by a competent performance against a Qatar side that will host Uzbekistan in Group A.
The hosts took the game to Jorge Fossati’s sie and were rewarded on the stroke of half-time as Abdoh Autef fired home a spectacular opener from outside the area.
Eight minutes after the break however, Qatar were back on level terms as Ibrahim Magid conjured up some long-range magic of his own.
Saudi Arabia grabbed the winner just before the hour thanks to Faisal Al Sultan.
