Schalke shook off their Champions League nightmare with victory over Bochum on Saturday.
Only days after Wednesday night's 4-0 mauling at the hands of Atletico Madrid, knocking them out of Europe's top team competition, Schalke bounced back as Heiko Westermann's 36th-minute goal proved enough to earn them three points.
Bochum's poor afternoon was completed when Christian Fuchs was sent-off in injury time.
Schalke saw a 1-0 advantage in their Champions League third round qualifier against Atletico turn to dust in Madrid, and needed to make a response.
They began brightly, and almost went ahead in the sixth minute when Jermaine Jones struck a powerful volley goalwards, but Bochum goalkeeper Daniel Fernandes made a good save.
Bochum went close at the other end as Mimoun Azaouagh's cross-cum-shot fizzed across the face of goal, but Christoph Dabrowski could not get the touch he needed to turn it in.
Westermann shot narrowly wide for Schalke in the 21st minute and then Jones put a shot just past the post after a fine run down the field.
Fernandes was busy again in the 34th minute, diving down low to keep out Gerald Asamoah's shot, but there was nothing he could do when Rafinha's cross picked out Westermann who headed home from close range.
Schalke continued to push for a second goal to make it comfortable, and were unlucky in the 66th minute as they went close twice. First, Fernandes did well to keep out Kevin Kuranyi's header and moments later Asamoah sent an effort just over the crossbar.
Schalke goalkeeper Mathias Schober kept out Azaouagh's shot as the visitors went in search of an equaliser, but it was still the hosts who looked the more likely to score and Kuranyi was unlucky to see a shot come off the crossbar.
Bochum were then reduced to 10 men in injury time as Fuchs was shown a second yellow card.
