Korea, without their European-based stars, are in the Middle East ahead of their Group Two game with Saudi Arabia while Qatar are preparing for a match with Japan.
South Korea took the lead in fortuitous fashion after just seven minutes.
Lee Chung-yong’s free-kick from outside the left edge of the penalty area bounced in the middle of the box and sailed into the far corner with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot, perhaps distracted as Ki Sung-yong slipped just in front of him.
Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Qatar created few chances in the first half. Sebastian Quintana was the dangerman and after a smart turn on the edge of the area, the Uruguay-born striker shot wide.
Yeom Ki-hoon should have extended Korea’s lead ten munutes after the break but shot over from close range.
Qatar got a deserved equalizer with 17 minutes remaining, though again the goal was a lucky one.
Fábio César Montezine’s free-kick took a deflection off the Korean wall to fly past Lee Woon-jae and into the net.
