Osasuna played a full-strength team with both Iranians starting while Madrid played the best team available, due to suspensions and injuries. Madrid took an early lead through Gonzalo Higuain in the 11th minute but Plasil made it even only 5 minutes later. From then on, Osasuna had the better chances and Juanfran, Masoud and Javad could have made things clear even at halftime. Due to Recreativo's lead in Gijon however, Osasuna were already safe at halftime.
In the second half, Madrid looked dangerous from set pieces, but couldn't put the ball behind the line. Meanwhile, Salgado from Real Madrid got a harsh sending off and Casillas had to save against Nekounam from point blank after a corner.
In the 60th minute however Osasuna took the lead through a brilliant strike by former Madrid player Juanfran after Metzelder failed to clear the ball from the penalty area.
Osasuna were safe and because of Sporting turning over the game against Recreativo and Betis conceding an equaliser against Valladolid, Betis went down.
Masoud was later on subbed out after a decent game, while Nekounam played the full game.
The win assures Osasuna another year in the Spanish Primera Division and both Masoud and Nekounam should stay on.
