Ali Kafashian, secretary general of Iran's Olympic Committee, was selected as the new president for the next four years, after Wednesday's election. The only other candidate, Shahrokh Shahnazi, head of the country's tennis federation, had earlier withdrawn from the race.
Mehdi Taj was elected as Kafashian's deputy.
Kafashian's first task is to appoint a head coach for Iran national football team, with the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers starting in less than a month time. Arthur Jorge is the favourite to land the job, although his appointment is by no means guaranteed.
