ACL: Daei's farewell to Saipa

DUBAI – Al Wasl coach Ze Mario hopes that his players will be able to give him a memorable parting gift on Wednesday when they host group winners Saipa in their final Group B game at the Zabeel Stadium.

With the Iranian club already through to the last eight of the AFC Champions League, the match is of only academic interest but Ze Mario, who led the Dubai club to the domestic double last season is eager to end his reign with a victory.

"There's nothing to play for in this game but I still wish to win this and our final domestic league game against Al Sharjah. That's the least I can do and the least I can expect from my players," said the Brazilian, who will take charge of Saudi side Al Shabab next season.

"They have done their best this season but it's not possible for teams to stay at the top all the time.

“I have been in the sport long enough to understand the good times and the bad times.

"We'll field our best team and we are not concerned whether Saipa field their second string.

“They may have already qualified but they won't be coming here for a picnic. They are unbeaten in the group stage and would want to finish that way."

Defender Ali Mahmoud will miss the game after receiving his second yellow card in the 2-1 win over Al Quwa Al Jawiya two weeks ago but Brazilian midfielder Rogerio Silva returns after serving a one-game suspension.

Ali Daei will also be overseeing his final game as Saipa coach before turning his full attention to Iran’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

Daei led the Karaj side to the Iranian league title in his debut season as coach and although they failed to retain their championship this year, he is pleased with the legacy he is leaving behind.

“I’m unhappy about our league results (this season) but I’m pleased that we’ve managed to bring through some promising youngsters,” said Daei, who will remain on the club’s board of directors.

“Although I won’t be head coach after the match on Wednesday, I will always be available if anyone from the club needs advice.”

Saipa will begin the search for Daei’s successor next week.

Iran internationals Ebrahim Sadeghi, Jalal Hoseini and Majid Gholamnejad have joined national team training and will miss Wednesday’s match while midfielder Kianoush Rahmati is out injured.
