Abedzadeh to coach Persepolis

Former Iranian national soccer captain Ahmadreza Abedzadeh has signed with Persepolis to train the goalkeepers of popular Iranian team.

"I joined Persepolis to make the fans happy and help the club defend its championship title and bring it success in the Asian games," Abedzadeh said Thursday upon signing a one-year contract to coach the team's goalies.

While former national team coach Afshin Peyrovani also recently joined the ranks of Persepolis coaches, the club is expected to soon appoint a head coach to steer the squad.

Last May, Persepolis won the Iranian Premier League Championship and became the first club to win the title for a second time. Its head coach Afshin Qotbi, however, promptly resigned upon taking home the title due to personal problems.

The 42-year-old Abedzadeh is perhaps the best-known Iranian goalkeeper, whose spirit and quick moves led Iran to the World Cup 1998.
