www.iransportspress.com: Sepahan last year proved they were second best in Asia, playing without NavidKia and playing outside their own castle. Sepahan this year could prove to be absolute best in Asia, playing with NavidKia and playing inside their castle.
Saudi Arabia’s representatives in the AFC Champions League have played over 30 home games since 2004, and only lost three of them. Once in the 2004 final against Seongnam and twice against Sepahan of Iran, the latter on Wednesday night.
Sepahan playing without possibly three of their most important players, Aghili, NavidKia and Karimi, needed nothing else but a heroic showdown against one of the few powerhouses in Asia. A very similar Al Ittihad team cruised to two Champions League titles in 2004 and 2005 but it seems losing to the same team twice, which has never happened to a Saudi team before except for Sepahan's two victories against Al Shabab[1], will stop their cruising in 2008.
Sepahan though could now hope to do just a bit better than last year, if the club can have all it’s pieces fall into place. The management needs first of all to set their own stadium in order. Next to that the team's injured key players need to recover their fitness and last but not least a home-sick Kuruvchi needs to be beaten. However after Wednesday night's heroic performance is there anything this Sepahan team can’t do?
Saipa has done heroics of their own, considering their crop of players. Not losing in the two remaining rounds should seal the spot in the last eight, once there, it would probably be the end of the road for them though.
However, its a different story for Sepahan. If they qualify, then can go all the way…
