Timo boll onto the fourth round at Alamiyan's cost

Noshad Alamiyan's run at a medal ends in the fourth round of the 2012 Olympics.

 

Zhang Jike and Wang Hao of China reached the fourth round in men's table tennis singles Monday at the Olympics.

The top-seeded Zhang defeated Bora Vang of Turkey 4-0, and No. 2 Wang was an easy 4-1 winner over Werner Schlager of Austria.

No. 3 Jun Mizutani of Japan and No. 4 Timo Boll of Germany also moved on. Mizutani beat El-Sayed Lashin of Egypt 4-1, and Boll defeated Noshad Alamiyan of Iran 4-0.

Three seeded players went out. No. 6 Joo Sae-huyk of South Korea lost to Kim Hyok Bong of North Korea 4-2 in a match with political overtones. Also, No. 14 Adrien Mattenet of France lost to Chen Weixing of Austria 4-0, and No. 16 Alexander Shivaev of Russia fell to Andrej Gacina of Croatia 4-3.

The fourth round was set for later Monday.
