international aviation experts have been quick to cast doubt on the claim of pure Iranian technology and have suggested that the design is that of the U.S.-made F-5F jet, first built in the early 1970s. Tehran purchased F-5s from America in 1974, five years before the Iranian revolution.

Not only that, this F5 clone has been re-introduced as a new Iranian fighter jet 4 times in the past 22 years under other names.

Nothing wrong with reverse-engineering a marvel like the F5, but jeeez could they be any slower?! lol!

We have yet to witness any of these 'new' planes in flight. Every time, they show a fighter-jet blacked out by the sunshine behind it so no one can tell if it's an actual original F5 flying or one of the clones they have made.

I don't think they can even fly their clones. If they could, they would be mass producing them in silence.

^^ yeah but that's most likely an original F5. Iran has a few of them remaining that are air-worthy.

They should show an in-flight video of the clone they have produced. I want to know if they've managed to produce the sheet-metals, the hydraulics, the wiring, the flaps, mechanical instruments and all that shebang. That's what producing an airplane is, not adding some digital gadget to its front-dash!

Producing fighter plane is no trivial engineer task. it takes a country that is excellent in many disciplines.

Iran has previously tried it's hand in reverse engineering and building some replicas of F4 (multi role) and F5 (air superiority).

It is very conceivable that Iran would be able to produce a handful ok quality planes such as these which belong to the so called 3rd gen.

It is a not bad exercise that might result in some good engineering discipline in the country.

but make no mistake about it, iran abandoned the idea of manned fighters 10 years ago.
iran has been focusing on UAV for quite a while and for very good reason.

Iran is likely only producing these planes to train engineers and pilots.

Iran still has some 50 operational F4s, F5s, F14, Mig29s, Sukoi 24s. and these sorts of projects dont necessarily end up any where.

you get multiple parallel projects going and then you reevaluate every 5 years or so where you should allocate your resources.

thus far iran's defense strategy is more in line with allocating resources toward UAV program.
